For the last novel project of the 2008 school year students have read Storming Heaven a novel about the West Virginia mine wars. Students researched various aspects of the war, and working with a partner produced a fact sheet about their selected topics. The fact sheets are in PDF files below.

Buffalo Creek Flood

The Buffalo Creek Flood occured February 26, 1972, when coal slurry impoundment damn in Logan County, owned by the Pittston Coal Company, burst. The flood occurred just four days after the damn had been declared “satisfactory” by a federal mine inspector.

The flood released approximately 132 million gallons of black waste water on the unsuspecting residents of 16 coalmining communitites.

Students Matt Codispoti and Robert Gillman researched the Buffalo Creek Flood disaster.

To more clearly understand the flood and how it occurred, it’s important to know what a Coal slurry impoundment damn is.

Stairway to West Virginia is a blog created by Logan High School seniors. Our goal is to provide resources about Southern West Virginia for anyone who might want to know a little fact and a little story about our place.

We realize that many teachers and students around the country read novels like Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam and The Glass Castle by Jeanetta Walls, and these readers may not know a great deal about our place.

It is our hope that this blog will provide a bit of information about the coalfield area of West Virginia. The issues and topics addressed in this blog were selected by students, based on the advice of generous teachers from around the country. This blog will continue to grow, as each successive year students add to the content.

Visit often during the school year, as new material will be periodically added.

The Greenbriar Bunker and Logan County Fallout Shelters

While examining landmarks of our state, students Meagan Greene and Amy Mareske decided to research the famour bunker at Greenbriar Resort, and more locally, fall out shelters in the city of Logan. Here is a link to the website they produced, featuring their research materials.

Chief Logan State Park

Southern West Virginia is filled with beautiful recreational and cultural areas. The New River with its white water rafting and bridge day is one example. Kanawha County has the Clay Center and the West Virginia Cultural Museum. Logan County has Chief Logan State Park. The park is often the center of activity for Logan Countianians. Most of us have at least one story about a life event that centered around the park. Marshall University Plane Crash

The Marshall University Plane Crash deeply affected all of West Virginia. Since many Logan County residents choose MU for post high school work, our area has a strong connection to the Thundering Herd, and we deeply remember the sad days during and following the tragedy.
